Awakening to Race: A Communal Learning Journey

diversity hands.png

Awakening to Race is a four-session anti-racism dialogue program that invites participants to reflect on how their own experiences with race have shaped their perspectives and beliefs. While one-time trainings may try to impart specific knowledge and skills, this multi-session program provides a communal learning journey that invites participants to dialogue in ways that awaken a higher consciousness of how matters of race shape our individual and collective experiences.

This sessions will be co-facilitated by Max Klau and a colleague of color; information about co-facilitators appears below.

The goals of this program are as follows:

-Create a space that makes it possible for groups to engage with issues of race with new levels of courage and honesty
-Raise the consciousness and deepen the understanding of how issues of race impact the individual lives and collective efforts of the group
-Support the group in engaging collectively with the work of anti-racism at a critical moment for the nation

In the Fall of 2020, Max ran this program with a group of approximately 25 judges and lawyers affiliated with the Massachusetts Housing Court. According to a final evaluation survey, 93% of the group “Agreed” or “Strongly Agreed” that the program achieved all three of these goals.
